Josh Cachia braves broken hand, MX Nats Podium

Tuesday, 24 May 2011

JDR Motorex KTM team rider Josh Cachia, has braved the elements and injury to earn a podium position at the fifth MX Nationals Championship round in Toowoomba on the weekend.

Cachia, who is the reigning Under 19’s class national champion took an emphatic victory in Moto One by over 7 seconds, in front of Suzuki rider Daniel McCoy. Third place was Yamaha rider Jake Moss, 30 seconds in tow of Cachia.

Moto’s Two and Three were not as straight forward for the 19 year old from Kilmore in Victoria. Crashes with other riders in both moto’s, left Cachia fighting through what was arguably the most difficult conditions in the championship so far, to salvage seventh and ninth place respective positions. The horrible conditions however were equally as challenging for the entire Pro Lite field, allowing Cachia to maintain a podium finish overall for the day after fighting back from near last in each.

Behind the scenes, Cachia’s preparation in recent weeks has been less than ideal. Shortly after the third MX Nationals round in Raymond Terrace, he crashed heavily practicing and fractured the second ‘Metacarpal’ in his left hand. Fearing he may be ruled out of competition, Cachia kept the injury to himself; determined still to achieve results in his first Pro Lite MX Nationals Championship. The young up and comer however feels mistakes cost him dearly in Toowoomba and uses no excuses.

“My hand has been bothering me quite a bit for the past couple of rounds, but this week I really think I had the speed to win overall. The first race went to plan and I was feeling really comfortable on the big again, but in races two and three I couldn’t avoid getting tangled up with some other riders. The conditions were REALLY hard. I’m looking forward to a good three weeks off before Coonabarabran; I’ll try to come out swinging there!” Josh Cachia said.

The weekend’s podium result was good enough to move Cachia back up to fifth place overall in the championship standings, 81 points behind championship leader and team mate Matt Moss.

The Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals continues in Coonabarabran, NSW on June 19. For more details go to www.mxnationals.com.au.
