After some fairly intense campaigning through facebook, family and friends, Dru Adler has emerged victorious in the first heat of Jim Beams The Break surf competition. After taking an early lead in the polls with his friends and family clearly behind him, it was going to be difficult for anyone to catch up as he surged on to victory. Dru finished voting with an impressive 582 votes.

Following Dru in second place for Heat 1 was Matt Neilsen from Mermaid beach in Queensland. Matt had an impressive video and deserved the late surge in voting he received towards the end of the week which moved him out of third place into second. Matt finished with 289 votes.

Coming in at third place was Ulladulla’s very own, Sam Wrench. Finishing with 283 votes, just 6 shy of second place, Sam’s video had it all – Big Turns, good waves and editing to match.

Rounding out the Heat were Ben Short and Rhys Smith. Both these guys pulled together epic entries and really impressed the judges with their abilities. Ben Short, wrapping up on 182 votes, had a ripping video with a particular highlight being the wave around 37 seconds into his clip, while Rhys Smith ended with 135 votes which is in no way a true reflection of his surfing style or ability.

The public votes helped the judges agree that Dru Adler was a stand out in this heat and look forward to putting him through his paces in the finals, the judges also saw talent in the guys that missed out so they’re all still in contention for the two wild card places

Andy Buckworth arrived back in Australia about two weeks ago from a stellar season in the states where he took Bronze in Big Air at X Games 16, and killed the Dew tour finishing with a 12th in Dirt and finishing 9th in Park the highest Australian rider. i spoke with Andy and he told me he has been catching up with family and friends but still riding almost every day, only having two days off when he got home.

Last weekend he went down to monster park in Sydney and rode in a little jam/contest thing they were holding, he ended up finishing 2nd even though he told me he thought a bunch of the other guys rode better than him and he didn't think he deserved it.

We have some pretty cool stuff coming up with Andy in the next few months so keep your eyes peeled for plenty of shots and video

Checked out the Brisbane Crusty show over the weekend while it was in town, the show was pretty sweet, they went back to a dirt set up and had a crazy set, the riding was top notch as usual and it was good to see Kain Saul pull the backflip on that monster harley and also see Jacko strong go for the Front flip which he would have nailed if he didn't hit the thick resi mats that are layed out on the side. Our boy Steve Mini killed and was riding insane he is back to his best at the moment, check out a little vid we made of him and also the official Crusty Thirst 4 Destruction Brisbane show highlights.
